Pressure passing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a method of passing the guard that involves using controlled, heavy pressure to immobilize an opponent, gradually breaking down their defenses and advancing to a more dominant position.

Our Amazing Coaching Team

Head Coach, Two Stripe Brown Belt & Kick Boxing Black Belt

Lee Tierney

Ever since I earned my brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu, my journey has been nothing short of transformative. Diving deep into the art, I have devoted myself to mastering the fundamentals, recognizing that a strong foundation is crucial for any advanced technique. My approach on the mats is methodical and deliberate, emphasizing the importance of basic positions, transitions, and submissions. This focus on the basics has not only sharpened my skills but also deepened my understanding of Jiu-Jitsu as a whole. I’ve learned to appreciate the nuances of each movement, understanding how even the slightest adjustments can significantly impact my game. My dedication to the fundamentals has become my greatest strength, allowing me to execute techniques with precision and effectiveness.

One area where my commitment to fundamentals truly shines is in my pressure passing game. Known among my peers for my relentless pressure passing, I’ve honed this skill to become a defining aspect of my style. My approach to passing guards is systematic and heavy, always maintaining control and applying constant pressure. This strategy not only helps me in advancing positions but also wears down my opponents mentally and physically. I’ve become adept at reading their movements and reactions, using this insight to adjust my pressure and angles, making my passes nearly unstoppable. This aspect of my game has not only led to numerous victories in sparring and competitions but has also become a part of my identity as a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu, showcasing my belief in the power of fundamentals and the effectiveness of a well-executed pressure game.

Guillotine & Defensive Game Specialist

Keelan Rodriguez

As a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu, my journey has been characterized by a deep dive into the art of defense and a specialization in guillotine chokes. This phase of my training has been about understanding the essence of ‘less is more.’ I’ve refined my ability to maintain composure under pressure, focusing on defensive strategies that not only protect me from submissions but also create opportunities for counters. My game is about patience and precision, waiting for the right moment to exploit an opponent’s overextension or mistake. This defensive mindset has not only enhanced my resilience on the mats but also taught me the importance of strategic thinking in Jiu-Jitsu. It’s a chess game, and each move I make is calculated to ensure maximum efficiency with minimum risk.

My reputation as a guillotine specialist has become a cornerstone of my style as a purple belt. The guillotine choke, for me, is not just a submission but an art form. I have dedicated countless hours to perfecting the nuances of this technique, from various grips and setups to understanding the subtle body mechanics involved. This specialization has made my opponents wary and cautious, as they know a single lapse in their guard could lead to a swift and decisive end. My ability to seamlessly transition from a defensive posture to locking in a guillotine has become a feared and respected aspect of my skill set. This dual focus on airtight defense and mastery of the guillotine choke has not only set me apart in competitions but also shaped my identity in the world of Jiu-Jitsu, representing a blend of patience, precision, and the sudden, explosive execution of a well-honed technique.

Royal Navy Physical Training Instructor and proud Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Mat James

It’s with great excitement that I join this vibrant BJJ family as your NOGI coach.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve had the privilege of steering both fitness and BJJ journeys as a Physical Training Instructor and Chairman/Coach of the Royal Navy BJJ Team. The mats have been my second home, and I’ve earned my stripes, quite literally, reaching the rank of purple belt.

My coaching philosophy is simple: make BJJ enjoyable for all. I take immense pride in witnessing my students thrive, whether they’re taking their first steps or eyeing the podium. With a relaxed training approach, I aim to create an environment where questions are encouraged, and each member can progress at their own pace. After all, we’re a diverse crew with unique journeys. What sets my coaching style apart is the blend of encouragement and a keen eye for those hungry for competition.

Now, when it comes to my personal style on the mats, it’s a bit tricky to pin down—I revel in the unpredictable. As a dedicated guard player, I find solace in the intricacies of escapes, blending technique and flexibility seamlessly. Triangles and Kimuras are my trusted allies, and you might catch me exploring the realms of X-guard or setting up intricate attacks from single-leg X positions and the odd Berimbolo every now and then haha.

I’m genuinely thrilled to be a part of the Angry Chill BJJ Team. Let’s roll, learn, and celebrate successes together. See you on the mats, shipmates!

Personal Trainer with a Martial Arts Focus

Adam Stevens

I’m Adam Stevens, and I’m psyched to join the coaching crew as a Person Trainer. Here’s a little about me and my martial arts journey, with a special focus on how I plan to bring strength and conditioning training into the mix.

My martial arts story kicked off at 11 with Judo. I soared through the ranks, snagging trophies left and right. My hard work landed me a spot on the British Judo team, and I battled it out in international arenas across Europe, especially in France and Holland.

After a brief hiatus, I dove back into the scene with MMA, where I shined in ground and wrestling techniques. My MMA debut was a blast – won it with an arm bar in round two! Now, as a PT, I’m all about blending strength and conditioning training with standing gi and no-gi grappling, Judo, and wrestling, topped with some solid groundwork.

Think high-intensity workouts, functional strength exercises, and conditioning routines that not only enhance martial arts skills but also build the kind of muscle power and endurance essential for any martial artist. Whether it’s increasing explosive power for throws or building stamina for grappling, my training sessions are designed to make every move more effective and every practitioner more resilient.

I’ll be offering private sessions so get in touch to find out more. Excited to meet you all and get to work on building stronger, more skilled martial artists. See you soon! 💪🏼🏋️‍♂️
